Transgender Discrimination Illegal in Nevada

    Transgender Discrimination Illegal in Nevada

Effective October 1, 2011 employers in the state of Nevada with 15 or more employees will be prohibited from discriminating in recruiting, hiring, firing and other terms and conditions of employment on the basis of gender identity or expression.

NRS 610.010 is amended to include gender identity or expression which is defined asa gender-related identity, appearance, expression or behavior of a person, regardless of the person’s assigned sex at birth. The Nevada Equal Rights Commission will be responsible for the investigation of claims and enforcement.

Employers may still enforce dress, clothing and appearance standards consistent with the preferred gender.

The bill's primary sponsors are Assemblyman Paul Aizley, D-Las Vegas, and Sens. David Parks, D-Las Vegas, and Sheila Leslie, D-Reno.
